Orientation and Mobility Department
Mobility Instruction consists of learning proper techniques for cane travel in both indoor and outdoor settings. It includes the development of special concepts, along with orientation to neighborhood and businesses, local geography, street crossings and bus travel.
Orientation and Mobility Specialists work together with individuals who are blind and visually impaired to design a specialized program to meet their specific and individual needs. One-on-one lessons are held five days a week on a scheduled basis.
The Travel Training Program is designed to provide people who are blind or visually impaired with the essential skills and knowledge to use the local fixed route bus system available throughout Western Riverside County. The primary goal of the program is to provide training to enable clients to ride the local fixed route bus service safely and efficiently, thereby reducing the demand on specialized para-transit services. When circumstances arise, (i.e. changes to bus routes, schedules and client needs), the re-training of program participants is encouraged.
Travel Training is also provided at no-cost for senior citizens who live in the city of Riverside.
Our Departments also provide training in Spanish.
